Internship Program
We are proud to support a formal internship program for college students at S. H. Smith. One of the best ways to describe it, is to learn about it from someone who has actually gone through the program.
The following is a brief Q&A with one of our first program graduates, Todd McDonald, Account Executive at S. H. Smith in the Professional Liability Department.

How many years has the internship program been in place?
The formal internship program began in June of 2004. Students have
regularly worked at S.H. Smith in the summers, however the company found
that the industry lacked thorough training for those who were just
beginning their careers. The company developed an academic curriculum to
supplement their broker shadowing training and the result was an ongoing
career development program.
Why did the program start with Amherst? Is this the only college that participates?
S.H. Smith contacted a variety of schools and Amherst College's Career
Center was the first to respond. As we had prior alumni relationships
with them, we started our internship with Amherst students. As we have
developed the program, a broader base of students has been used. We are
looking to expand the program into all of our territories with offices.
How are the students who participate in this program selected?
S.H. Smith recruits students in a variety of ways. We interview students
at selected campuses, we respond to all inquiries that come directly
from interested students, and we act on all referrals and
recommendations. The program is by no means exclusive to any group,
class, or academic background.

How many students per year are selected/participate?
Historically, we have selected 2 students for the CT office, and 2 for
the MA office for the summer program. As the program grows, we hope to
select students in our other territories. Students do not need to be
from the respective areas, however the student's ability to work in a
designated area is considered in our decision. Our ability to hire a
student post-internship is based the student's interest and aptitude,
their fit within the organization, and our need to fill positions.
How long is the program?
The program is intended to be a 10 week paid summer internship for
college juniors going into their senior year. In the past, college
sophomores and seniors have been selected so there is no restriction. If
the opportunity exists, students often return for their winter break
that year, and potentially for the next summer to begin their brokering
career.
What do people in the internship do?
To understand the position of being a wholesale broker, we feel it is
necessary for students to have broad view of the insurance industry.
Whether it be agency relationships, carrier practices, contract law or
claims, a good broker must have an understanding of how all of the
pieces fit. We provide in-depth, hands-on experience in each department,
and also give the students opportunities to travel with our marketing
representatives. Responsibilities include reading assignments, project
research and presentations, administrative work, and broker shadowing.
What percentage have been hired after completion of the program?
So far, 50% of the students who have joined the program have been
offered full time positions. Many of those students who interned prior
to the creation of the formal program have also been given the
opportunity to start their careers.
