S. H. Smith & Company, Inc. has been in business since 1982 under the current ownership structure. The firm's original roots go back an additional thirty years. We have always been an independent wholesale broker, and are proud to say we continue to attract the best insurance talent in the industry.
Our structure is that of four different wholesale operations under one umbrella.
Managing General Agency. We hold the pen for no less than ten carriers - all A.M. Best A rated. These facilities allow us to quote, bind, issue policies and conduct audits. We are also the focal point for claim activities for these carriers. Staffed by a thoroughly trained and experienced staff of underwriters, we enthusiastically search for business that fits the carrier's appetite. We have contracts in every territory where we have an office location, and their continuous states as well.
Wholesale Brokerage. In this area we broker individual property, casualty and pollution risks, as well as individual specialty risks such as product recall, tuition reimbursement, and tax interruption protection. On the casualty side are included umbrella liability, products liability, and general liability, and includes a layered property program as well as inland and ocean marine, and builders risk.
Professional Liability. One of the largest areas of our business focuses exclusively on all types of professional liability insurance. This includes directors and officers liability (financial institutions, non-profit, for profit, both public and private) as well as all matters of financial transaction insurance and malpractice. This includes not only investment bankers, but hedge funds, mutual funds, advisors and brokers, and any manner of financial transaction E&O that not only needs errors and omissions but also directors and officers and actual transaction insurance. We are empowered by the Scottsdale Insurance Group to underwrite misc. errors & omissions, with full program administrator responsibilities. Both of these areas of underwriting involve full program administrator responsibilities.
Program Unit. Within this division are three distinct and specific risk purchasing groups: Petroleum Marketers, Educational Institution, and Bus. New programs continue to be reviewed on an ongoing basis. Our teams of underwriters have in-depth knowledge in each of these three different industry groups and are empowered by different markets within the insurance industry (all A rated or higher) to quote, bind, and issue policies on behalf of our carriers. Risk purchasing groups are non-related homogeneous industry entities that are allowed under the Risk Retention Act of 1986 to stand together to acquire insurance in the open marketplace. We have been actively involved in this field since the passage of this act.
